New Listing: Kief-Joshua Vineyards

Welcome Kief-Joshua Vineyards to WineryPlacez.com
370 Elgin Rd. Elgin, Az 85611 Phone: 520.455.5582

Kief-Joshua Vineyards is a small family business that is situated on 20 acres in beautiful Elgin, Arizona, right in the middle of what has become known as "winery row." Our first planting was in 2005 and we have about ten acres under vine, consisting of ten different varieties: Tempranillo, Mourvedre, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Chenin Blanc, Syrah, Zinfandel, Reisling, Semillion and Viognier. And we continue to expand our vineyards every year. Our first harvest was in the fall of 2008. Proudly, we will release our first 2008 Estate

Viognier this summer, while our 2008 Estate Tempranillo will reman aging in a combination of french and american oak barrels until 2010. This fall we expect a larger crop from our vineyard, but will still rely on sourced fruit. This year our supplier from Dragoon, Arizona.

The idea to start a vineyard and winery stemmed from a long standing hobby of winemaking and gardening at home. "Kief was making wine in his home in Tempe," said Jeff Manning, Wine Sales Manager. "The day we tasted his lemon wine, which was made from fruit off a tree in his backyard, I knew he had found his passion."

In 2002, after the decision was made to open a winery, the house was sold, the property purchased and Kief Manning left Arizona State University, to pursue Viticulture studies in Australia, where he earned both a graduate and undergraduate degree in Viticulture and Enology.

Kief practices traditional winemaking methods of minimal interference, open fermentation and barrel aging. In 2006, Kief eliminated the use of herbicides and pesticides in the vineyard. "We strive for excellence in winemaking and sustainability in our vineyard," says Kief. "With time, I hope to produce outstanding Arizona wines that demonstrate the intensity, richness and complexity of the area."

Kief-Joshua Vineyards is a winery defined by family, passion and enthusiasm. We're committed to winemaking that will exceed your expectations.

About The Winery at Shale Lake
David and Susan Wesa purchased the 212 acre property now known as Shale Lake in September of 2006.  As a reclaimed coal mine the Old Mount Olive Staunton Coal Company Mine number 2 is well known in the region.  Hopefully it will be equally well known as an agri-tourism destination in the next few years.

History in the Making....
One of twenty-two coal mines operating in the area in the early 1900's, the Mount Olive-Staunton Coal Company Mine Number 2 was sunk in 1904 and closed in 1957.   Mined with the room and pillar panel method of extraction the Number 2 mine was the largest Herrin mine in the area.
In 1910 the total coal production from the local mines was over 4 million tons with over 4600 men employed in the shafts.
After the mine closed, Mobil Mineral Resources, Inc. worked with the Abandoned Mined Lands Reclamation Council to reclaim Number 2 and then donated it to the local area Boy Scout organization for recreational use in 1989.
The Boy Scouts sold the property for private use in 1996.  Ten years later, David and Susan Wesa found the property while searching for acreage to start a Vineyard in hopes of fulfilling a retirement dream of owning a Winery.  And now...by God's grace the dream has begun.

Review: Old Moon Zinfandel 2008

I know what all the wine experts are thinking, why review a cheap wine.

I bought a bottle of Old Moon Zinfandel for fun. Wanting something other than Charles Shaw for a change.
I was pleasantly surprised and would get it again, if I weren't wanting to try other wines.

Description from Label: Made with the fruit from vines 35 to 70 years old, this Zin has a luscious nose of spice and black cherry, revealing plum and cherry flavors with a hint of vanilla on a finish of soft tannins. Pair this bold wine with equally bold flavors like blue cheese, rib-eye steak and roast beef.

Wine: Old Moon Old Vine Zinfandel
Varietal: Zinfandel
Vintage: 2008
Alcohol: 14%
Trader Joe's: $4.99
