Elgin, Az 85611 Phone: 520.455.5582

Kief-Joshua Vineyards is a small family business that is situated on 20 acres in beautiful Elgin, Arizona, right in the middle of what has become known as "winery row." Our first planting was in 2005 and we have about ten acres under vine, consisting of ten different varieties: Tempranillo, Mourvedre, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Chenin Blanc, Syrah, Zinfandel, Reisling, Semillion and Viognier. And we continue to expand our vineyards every year. Our first harvest was in the fall of 2008. Proudly, we will release our first 2008 Estate

Viognier this summer, while our 2008 Estate Tempranillo will reman aging in a combination of french and american oak barrels until 2010. This fall we expect a larger crop from our vineyard, but will still rely on sourced fruit. This year our supplier from Dragoon, Arizona.

The idea to start a vineyard and winery stemmed from a long standing hobby of winemaking and gardening at home. "Kief was making wine in his home in Tempe," said Jeff Manning, Wine Sales Manager. "The day we tasted his lemon wine, which was made from fruit off a tree in his backyard, I knew he had found his passion."

In 2002, after the decision was made to open a winery, the house was sold, the property purchased and Kief Manning left Arizona State University, to pursue Viticulture studies in Australia, where he earned both a graduate and undergraduate degree in Viticulture and Enology.

Kief practices traditional winemaking methods of minimal interference, open fermentation and barrel aging. In 2006, Kief eliminated the use of herbicides and pesticides in the vineyard. "We strive for excellence in winemaking and sustainability in our vineyard," says Kief. "With time, I hope to produce outstanding Arizona wines that demonstrate the intensity, richness and complexity of the area."

Kief-Joshua Vineyards is a winery defined by family, passion and enthusiasm. We're committed to winemaking that will exceed your expectations.

Learn more at: http://www.kj-vineyards.com/

Malibu Family Wines: 4th Annual Food & Wine Pairing Event

Join us for our 4th annual Food & Wine Pairing Event on Sunday, November 7th, 2010 from 2:00pm - 5:00pm. purchased the 212 acre property now known as Shale Lake in September of 2006. As a reclaimed coal mine the Old Mount Olive Staunton Coal Company Mine number 2 is well known in the region. Hopefully it will be equally well known as an agri-tourism destination in the next few years.

History in the Making....
One of twenty-two coal mines operating in the area in the early 1900's, the Mount Olive-Staunton Coal Company Mine Number 2 was sunk in 1904 and closed in 1957. Mined with the room and pillar panel method of extraction the Number 2 mine was the largest Herrin mine in the area.
In 1910 the total coal production from the local mines was over 4 million tons with over 4600 men employed in the shafts.
After the mine closed, Mobil Mineral Resources, Inc. worked with the Abandoned Mined Lands Reclamation Council to reclaim Number 2 and then donated it to the local area Boy Scout organization for recreational use in 1989.
The Boy Scouts sold the property for private use in 1996. Ten years later, David and Susan Wesa found the property while searching for acreage to start a Vineyard in hopes of fulfilling a retirement dream of owning a Winery. And now...by God's grace the dream has begun.

Our Accomplishments and Plans....

Our Fishing Membership program has been running since 2007.
We planted over 3000 Grape Vines in April of that same year.
The 10 acre Vineyard includes Red Grape Varietals of Chambourcin, Norton and Foch and White Varietals of Traminette and Vignoles.
We are committed to making and selling ILLINOIS wines in ILLINOIS!
We opened the Premium Horse Boarding Stables in the Lower Barn in 2007
and the Pasture Boarding in the Upper Barn in 2009.
We converted the Trail Office to a Tasting Room in 2010
Opening the Winery on September 3rd, 2010.
We have been building the 78 site Campground (weather permitting)
for the last year and will be building
a Wedding Destination Location including a Hill Top Gazebo (the Hitching Post), Banquet Center at the North end of the Lake, Cabins
and a Limo Bus (The Shale Snail) in the future.

Yes, these wines are from grapes grown in Malibu not on the famous beach, but in a scenic valley four miles from the coast, 1,400-feet up, above the coastal fog, in the AVA Malibu Newton Canyon.
George Rosenthal, owner of movie studios, hotels, and other enterprises, first planted vineyards at his 250 acre estate in 1987, after spending two years checking soil and weather to make sure he planted the correct varietals in the correct locations.
25 acres of hillside vines are planted in this unique microclimate, where cool breezes filter into Newton Canyon in the evening, tempering warm, sunny days. Even with this boutique size, individual plots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc are separately vinified and barrel-aged before blending.
Winemaker Christian Roguenant strives to bring out the unique terroir of the site. The reds are unfiltered and unfined, and the Chardonnay does not go through ML. All the grapes come from the estate vineyards.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay can be enjoyed in some of LA's toniest restaurants, and some of Hollywood's top stars have sipped the wines at the estate.
You may not be able to wrangle an invitation to the vineyard (then again, you might), but you can now enjoy these wines at your own –estate”.
Due to various regulations, Rosenthal- The Malibu Estate is not available for general visits, tours and wine tastings. However, the estate is available for limited large private tours or certain VIP visits from time to time, by invitation only. Note that we do not host weddings or wedding receptions.

Featured Wines
2007 Surfrider Riesling, 2008 Surfrider Viognier, 2007 Surfrider Pinot Gris, 2007 Surfrider Chardonnay, 2007 Rosenthal Estate Chardonnay, 2000 Rosenthal Merlot, 2005 Rosenthal Merlot, 2005 Surfrider Red, 2000 Rosenthal Cabernet Sauvignon, 2004 Rosenthal Cabernet Sauvignon, 2004 Rosenthal Meritage

Location & Hours
We do invite you to visit our luxurious new Rosenthal – The Malibu Estate Tasting Room, open to the public.
